Everything you need to know about Windows 7 end of life and how to solve it

What is happening and why?

On January 14th 2020, Windows 7 will reach “end of life”. This means Microsoft will no longer support Windows 7 on laptops and desktops and no longer provide security patches or troubleshooting support.

– Microsoft

All operating systems eventually reach a point where they are no longer worth the expense, time and potential risk of ongoing maintenance. Windows 7 is 10 years old and has been in an “extended support” phase since 2015, meaning new features have been added since then and the product was out of standard warranty.

As of January 2020, Windows 7 will not be supported at all.

Hardware slowdowns

Windows 7 is not designed to run on the latest hardware, so if you try, it will often cause systems slowdowns and crashes.

Software incompatibility

New software and apps usually take full advantage of the latest capabilities of modern operating systems. The longer you stay on Windows 7, the more apps you will not be able to use.

Bug Battles

Bugs are a fact of life for any operating system, but after “end of life”, Microsoft will no longer be looking for them or issuing fixes.

Hacker Attacks

Similar to the ceasing of bug fixes, Microsoft will stop providing security updates. Which means hackers are likely to be particularly targeting devices on Windows 7 for exactly this reason.

What can I do to fix it?

“Microsoft strongly recommends that you move to Windows 10 sometime before January 2020 to avoid a situation where you need service or support that is no longer available.”

– Microsoft

Windows 10 is Microsoft’s most recent operating system, offering faster start-up, stronger malware security, safer web browsing, and better syncing across devices, amongst other benefits.

Upgrading to Windows 10 is clearly strongly recommended, but in addition, if your laptop or tablet is using Windows 7, then the chances are the device is similarly out-of-date and under-performing, or even out of warranty. The most convenient and cost-effective approach is therefore to update your hardware at the same time as your operating system.

Lenovo has launched a variety of new Windows 10-enabled devices that are designed to help businesses get the most for their budget and accelerate time to market – and Calligo is a Lenovo Gold Personal Computing Partner, meaning we can offer the most up-to-date range of devices at competitive prices.
